Orly MegaPixel FX Collection Spring 2013.

Orly Mega Pixel FX Collection Spring 2013 bottle shot

I really hadn't heard much about Orly's new MegaPixel FX collection, except that it was supposed to be  Orly's version of Liquid Sand or Pixie Dust. I have to say though, that once I got them home and swatched, they didn't seem that textured. They mostly were the same as a lot of the thick opaque glitters I have in my collection. Hungry for topcoat, but nothing extreme like the other textured polishes out there. These are very pretty, I just don't know that they deserve the "FX" distinction...or the $10 price tag. Anyhow, onto swatches!

Orly Silver Pixel is a mix of a ton of silver microglitter and some larger hex glitter thrown in. Like most of the polish in the collection, it doesn't dry to an especially textured finish. It just looks like it needs a bit of topcoat. As you can see, there's not a huge difference once the topcoat is added, either. It's quite opaque, this is only two coats.

Orly Rose Pixel is the same mix of microglitter and slightly larger hex glitter, this time in a pretty silvery pink hue. Again, it doesn't differ much with topcoat. This one needed a third coat for opacity, though.

Orly Plum Pixel is a lilac version of the previous two glitters. This is a pretty color and I don't have any purple glitter like this. Two coats

Orly Aqua Pixel is a really pretty teal blue. Again, the formula is the same as the previous polishes. This took two coats.

Orly Pink Pixel, a slightly muted fuchsia, is one of two polishes that actually dried a bit textured, but it wasn't enough that it seemed purposeful. Two coats.

Orly Black Pixel differs from the rest of the polishes in this collection with a black jelly base and silver microglitter. It doesn't contain the same larger hex glitter as the rest of the collection, and it it is definitely the most textured of the bunch. Three coats.

  1. Sorry, but these are probably the worst swatches I've seen in a while. The polishes look absolutely horrible in your pictures. No good.

    2. Haha, some people! I hope they know everyone read that comment and knew it was stupid.

    3. Sorry dear Mr or Mrs Anonymous, but this is probably (ok not probably but definitely) the worst comment I've seen in a while. No good.

  2. The colors don't thrill me but certainly nothing wrong with your swatches. Thank you for taking the time to do these. I bought a couple pixie dust......still on the fence.

    1. Thank you for your comment! I've been worried about the comment above thinking something was terribly wrong. I was was pretty underwhelmed with the collection as well. I'm glad I got them for way under the asking price. So far Pixie Dust has been my favorite line of "texture" polishes.

  3. Color me underwhelmed too (not by your swatches!!) by this collection. I'm not on board the textured trend anyway, there's only been a few from OPI and Zoya that I've liked. Definitely don't like any of these.

    1. I agree. I am still looking forward to the China Glaze textured polishes because I think they have the most interesting colors. I hope they don't disappoint!

  4. While not as pretty in color or texture as Zoya Pixie or China Glaze, I think your swatches look great!

    1. Thank you! I can't wait to get the new Zoyas for summer!

  5. I don't usually comment on these things, but I just wanted to jump into the fray defending your swatches. I picked up Black Pixel not knowing it was a texture polish (which is fine—I bought one of OPI's LiquidSands and loved it) so I wanted to make sure I would like it before I tried it myself. Swatches of these are hard to come by, for some reason, and all the other posts I've seen have made Black Pixel look like tar or asphalt. Your swatch is the only one I've seen so far where it actually looks kind of pretty! So don't worry about that grumpy nonny-mouse up there; there's nothing wrong with your swatches at all.

  6. Dang they look so pretty in the bottles. I might still get the rose one. Zoya does have the best. Opi sands are eh. Glad you git them cheaper. At least orlys mash up looks promising :)

  7. Thanks for swatching these !

Against my better judgement - I bought the pink and plum ones. The pink one looks like the Julie G. "Crushed Candy" polish in the frosted gumdrop collection. I was hoping Orly's would be different, but they look the same to me. Possibly a wee bit more metallic. I think I like the Julie G. better.
I'm kind of disappointed these aren't more textured. The plum is very pretty tho, I don't think I have anything like it.

Have you seen the Orly Mash Up collection yet ? Sparkling Garbage is TO DIE FOR. It's like if Nubar Reclaim was a scattered holo instead of linear. Absolutely stunning. My Sallys just got them in and let me buy it even tho it's not on the shelf yet.

    1. We just got the Julie G frosted gum drops in yesterday! (We both ordered them off of Groupon) I'm excited to swatch them this weekend. I'll try to get T to do a comparison of Crushed Candy and Pink Pixel. :D

Isn't it great to have a good relationship with your Sally's manager? Mine let me buy their old Orlys for a dollar each when they switched over to the new bottles. I was in heaven.

  8. I also just wanted to add a comment in defense of your swatches, which are great!! You can't help that the polishes are nothing special, but your pictures and swatches are wonderful!! For the person that said otherwise, perhaps she needs glasses or like you said, is an Orly employee and felt the need to bash you, instead of what is really wrong in these pictures...the polishes!! Vey boring and a poor example of textured polishes!!

  9. Your swatches are great... I got a couple of these-- the pink, the aqua, and the rose and really like them. I didn't expect them to be textured, though, and I'm happy they aren't.

(And ignore the haters like the rude commenter above... somehow they never seem to put up swatches of their own.....)

  10. Sorry to reply on such an old post, but I just wanted to let you know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with your pictures. I purchased silver pixel and I am wearing it not - it looks exactly the same when I hold my hand up to your picture without the topcoat. I am underwhelmed by these polishes, with the exception of the silver pixel, which I actually really like. That being said, pixie dust is still the best texture out there, IMO.

    1. Thanks for the support! :) I like pixie dusts too, but some of the bond girl sands are winning me over.

  11. I just came across this, so I'm late to the party. I'm a huge fan of Orly, and while they don't really seem like they should be in the textured category, I'm loving them. I especially like the black! So much depth going on with the top coat! Lovely pics! I really appreciate swatches that aren't photoshopped to death. You really don't know what you're getting with those. These are crisp and clear and most importantly, accurate! <3

  12. First I'll also chime in with 'great pics'! I can almost feel the texture! Years ago, glitter polish was very textured, so to me this is nothing new. I don't much care for texture, but the Orly black pixel has caught my eye. Now THIS is new!

  13. I don't see anything wrong about your swatches, they look good to me. The polish however does look a lot prettier in real life, but capturing sparkles a/o glitters is always a tough job. I recently purchased the silver shade and I am really pleasantly suprised. It is quite opaque indeed and it only took me two layers to achieve full coverage. It's not as textured as OPI's liquid sands (for example), but it's still very pretty and I won't be wearing this polish with a topcoat :) They more matte than textured, but still very cool.
